Goa is one of the top holiday destinations in India, thanks to the beautiful palm lined beaches that cover dozens of kilometres along its coast. The hippies were the first to discover this seaside paradise in the late 1960’s, but the 1980’s brought in many hotels. Goa is not a city but India’s smallest state, of which Panaji is the capital. Unlike the rest of India, Goa is a former Portuguese colony. It still has a bit of a Mediterranean vibe; you’ll find white houses and impressive white catholic cathedrals in the towns. 40% of the population is catholic. There are crosses on every street corner and people take a siesta in the afternoon, making it more Southern-European than Indian. Nowadays it’s not only hippies who come here. Indians enjoy their vacations here as well. A holiday in Goa is synonymous with ‘taking it easy’.
