Old Goa was the capital of the former Portuguese colony. What remains is some catholic churches, of which the impressive Basilica of Bom Jesu is the most famous. This baroque cathedral dates from 1605 and is home to the silver casket holding the remains of Francis Xavier. According to the local guide this is the place of a great miracle, since the Xavier’s body (who died in 1550) has resisted decay and stayed intact. The body of Francis is kept in a mausoleum on the right side of the basilica, in a glass box under golden stars. You’ll find a modern art gallery above the church’s side wing.
