Although located in Agra, a three hour train ride from Delhi, many people visit the Taj Mahal as a day trip from Delhi. India’s national poet Rabrinadranath Tagore described the Taj Mahal as ‘a solitary tear suspended on the cheek of eternity’. You’d think that something as hyped and celebrated as the Taj Mahal is bound to disappoint in real life. But in case of ‘the Taj’ nothing could be further from the truth. This superb white marble mausoleum never fails to enchant its visitors. Of which there are many. A few million visitors per year come to this Wonder of the World. The Taj Mahal was built by Shah Jahan as a tomb for his beloved wife Mumtaz Mahal, who died in childbirth in 1631. This is said to have left Shah Jahan so heartbroken that he turned grey overnight. The Taj Mahal is being praised for the perfect symmetry and the beautiful decorations. No fewer than 28 types of gemstones are used in the inlay work. According to many, the early morning is the best moment for a visit. The soft morning light gives it a beautiful pink colour.
