The Souk

The genius will explore what you can pay for!

You're likely to get lost quickly in the labyrinth of narrow, colourful streets of the souk (market), where merchants are selling anything you can think of. Don't worry, wandering is an ideal way to discover the Jewish, Armenian, Muslim and Christian quarter. Virtually everywhere are places to take a break and enjoy a cup of Arabic coffee, freshly squeezed juice or falafel with humus, while a colourful parade of people pass: tourists, Jews, Muslims and pilgrims from all over the world. If you see a stairway leading to the roofs of the Old Town, climb it: there's a whole other life taking place there. If you're lucky you'll have stunning views of the Golden Dome of the Rock, which dominates the skyline. Do not forget to bargain, because that's part of the game on this market.

Address Souk: good starting point for a visit to the market is Jaffa Gate, one of the most famous entrance gates to the Old City.
