Elephanta Caves

About ten kilometres from Mumbai is the island Elephanta (Gharapuri). On this thickly wooded island you’ll find seven caves with carved temples and sculptures dedicated to Lord Shiva. In front of the caves you’re greeted by a large statue of a triple-headed Shiva. The caves are UNESCO World Heritage and are accessible by ferry from the Gateway of India.
