The city of Geneva lays in bend in the Rhône, where the river exits Lake Geneva, between the nearby Alpes and the Jura ridgeway. On the right shore of the lake you'll find the many big hotels and restaurants. Above the left bank rises the old town, Geneva's beating heart with the shopping centre.
Geneva houses the European seat of the United Nations and it is the base of the International Red Cross's humanitarian missions. That's why Geneva is often called the Capital of Peace. Besides a convention town Geneva is also a centre of culture and history, fairs and exhibitions.
