Museum van Schone Kunsten

The Museum of Fine Arts was founded in 1801 on the initiative of Napoleon. This Classicist palace was built at the beginning of the 18th century by Cardinal Armand de Rohan-Soubise. Apart from the Museum of Fine Arts are also the Museum of Decorative Arts (Musée des Arts Décoratifs: crockery, glassware, furniture and interior design from the glory days of Bordeaux) and the Archaeological Museum (Musée archéologique) housed in the Palais Rohan. The rest of the building is used as the city hall.

The museum has a large collection of art from the Renaissance. By a major purchase in 1829, the museum acquired no fewer than 280 works by Dutch, Italian, Flemish and German masters. You can view paintings by among others Pérugin, Brueghel, Van Dyck, Van Goyen, Rubens, Delacroix and Matisse.
